U-Shaped Outdoor Kitchen Layout FAQs

What is the minimum space needed for a U-Shape?

We recommend a minimum patio footprint of 10′ x 10′. This accounts for the standard 30-inch counter depth on all three sides, while leaving a comfortable 48-inch interior clearance. This “Chef’s Zone” is critical; anything narrower than 48 inches inside the “U” will make it difficult to open grill doors or drawers without stepping back into the opposite counter.

Should I build a U-Shape or an L-Shape?

It comes down to Flow vs. Zoning.

  • Choose an L-Shape if you want to keep your patio open. It allows traffic to flow past the kitchen rather than into it.
  • Choose a U-Shape if you want to create a distinct room. It separates the “Working Zone” from the “Dining Zone,” keeping guests on the outside of the bar while the chef works undisturbed on the inside.

How do I handle the corner spaces?

In traditional construction, corners are difficult to frame. With the Unity System, we use dedicated Corner Modules that lock the two wings together at a perfect 90-degree angle. These corners provide valuable deep countertop space—perfect for setting out buffet trays, pizza prep stations, or beverage tubs—turning what is usually “dead space” into a functional serving area.

Is a U-Shape harder to build than a straight island?

The assembly process is identical (stacking and gluing), but the layout requires a bit more attention. You must ensure your first corner is perfectly square before expanding outward. We recommend laying out your first course of blocks “dry” (without glue) to verify your footprint and check for squareness. Once the base is set, the rest of the island stacks up effortlessly.
